Santa Clarita Personal Injury Attorney: Reading the Valley’s Crash Numbers

On paper, Santa Clarita drives carefully. Among 62 California cities of similar size, it placed 52nd for total people killed or injured in 2023, with 765 victims, and 61st for speed-related crashes, where 1st is worst (California Office of Traffic Safety). Those rankings are real, but they do not describe the Newhall Pass at rush hour, a canyon curve on a motorcycle, or a smoke-filled evacuation on SR-14. Both pictures matter to a Santa Clarita personal injury attorney building your case, and both should shape what you tell an adjuster.

At a glance: 765 people were hurt or killed in 2023; more than 350,000 vehicles travel through the Newhall Pass each day; sheriff’s deputies, not city police, write most street reports; and Henry Mayo is the valley’s trauma center.

The City’s 2023 Numbers, Best to Worst

Each OTS placement compares a city only with peers of similar population. Santa Clarita is in Group B; federal figures put the city at 229,159 people as of July 2024 (U.S. Census Bureau).

2023 categoryCountPlace out of 62, 1st = worst

Crashes involving drinking drivers under 211126th

Read from top to bottom, the table moves from reassuring to less so. The worst-placed crash category is young drinking drivers. The 13th-place DUI arrest figure is the opposite of a danger signal: it measures how actively deputies enforce the law.

Deputies, Troopers, and the Report You Will Need

Santa Clarita has no city police department. It contracts with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, whose Santa Clarita Valley Station on Golden Valley Road serves roughly 290,000 people, about 220,000 of them inside city limits.

Serious injuries usually go to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital on McBean Parkway, an adult Level II trauma center and one of 13 in the county (Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital). Providence Holy Cross in Mission Hills is the nearest designated alternative to the south (Los Angeles County EMS). Ask for the trauma bay’s imaging reports along with your discharge papers.

The Crash Was on Soledad Canyon Road, Just Outside City Limits. Does That Change My Claim?

The responding agency and the report change, often from sheriff’s deputies to CHP, but your rights do not. The same two-year rule and fault principles apply on either side of the line.

Newhall Pass: 350,000 Vehicles and a CHP Report

Where I-5 meets SR-14 at the Newhall Pass, the California Highway Patrol says average traffic exceeds 350,000 vehicles a day on a link it calls vital between Central and Southern California (CHP Newhall Area). Its Newhall Area office patrols 204 miles of freeway and 296 miles of unincorporated roads across 772 square miles from 28648 The Old Road in Valencia.

Freeway collisions here tend to involve more vehicles, more commercial traffic, and more disagreement over who changed lanes first. I-5 forms the city’s western edge and SR-14 its eastern side (Wikipedia), so a commute in almost any direction touches one of them. When a semi is part of the pileup, the carrier’s own coverage and its logbooks become targets for evidence requests; our truck accident page explains those claims in more detail.

Tip: On the freeway, write down the nearest call box number or exit. CHP reports are indexed by location, and “near the 14 split” is not enough to find yours.

Under-21 Drinking Drivers and Motorcycle Canyons

Eleven people were hurt or killed in 2023 in crashes involving a drinking driver under age 21, the city’s worst-ranked crash category at 26th. A claim against a teenage driver usually runs through a parent’s auto policy, and the vehicle owner’s liability can matter as much as the driver’s.

Motorcycle casualties reached 36. Sierra Highway, San Francisquito, Bouquet, Soledad, Placerita, and Sand Canyon all wind through hilly, fire-prone terrain in and around the city. Sheriff’s deputies have also stepped up enforcement against high-powered e-motorcycles ridden like bicycles, with fines above $500 (City of Santa Clarita). If a rider on one of those machines hit you, whether it counts as a motor vehicle shapes which insurance, if any, applies. Riders hurt on Bouquet or Sand Canyon can find information for their own side of a claim on our motorcycle accident page.

Can a Santa Clarita Car Accident Lawyer Help If I Was Also Speeding a Little?

Yes. A jury or adjuster assigns percentages, and your recovery is reduced by your share. Speed estimates from vehicle data often narrow those arguments.

Dark Signals and Fire Evacuations

The 2019 Tick Fire burned 4,615 acres, destroyed 22 structures, and pushed about 40,000 valley residents onto the roads. Power outages knocked traffic signals dark and closed SR-14 (Wikipedia). The Buckweed, Rye, and Sand fires came before it, and the January 2025 Southern California fires reached the valley too.

California law treats a dark signal as an all-way stop (California Vehicle Code § 21800). A driver who rolls through a dead light during an evacuation is not excused by the emergency. Photograph the signal head if you can and note the time; utility outage records can later confirm it was off.

I Was Hurt While Evacuating. Is Anyone Responsible?

Possibly another driver, if they ran a dark signal or cut across lanes. The fire itself is not a defendant, but careless driving during it can still create an auto accident claim.

Five Intersections the City Is Rebuilding

In 2022, the city won $1.5 million in federal funds for traffic and pedestrian improvements at five intersections, including one wildfire evacuation route (City of Santa Clarita):

  • McBean Parkway and Newhall Ranch Road
  • Valley Center Drive and Golden Valley Road
  • Soledad Canyon Road and Golden Oak Road
  • Copper Hill Drive and Rio Norte Drive
  • Copper Hill Drive and Newhall Ranch Road

Separately, Orchard Village Road between Lyons Avenue and Mill Valley Road lacks sidewalks along much of its length near schools, and in 2024 the city striped a grant-funded pilot lane for pedestrians and cyclists (City of Santa Clarita). A crash at a location under redesign may raise a road-condition question against a public agency, and those claims run on a short clock.

Six Moves After a Valley Crash

  1. Tell the 911 dispatcher your exit or call box number on the freeway, or the cross street if you are in Valencia, Saugus, or Newhall.
  2. Accept the ambulance if paramedics suggest it. Henry Mayo’s trauma team records injuries in detail that an urgent-care visit two days later cannot match.
  3. Photograph both vehicles, skid marks, debris, and the signal heads, whether lit or dark.
  4. Ask whoever takes the report, deputy or trooper, for a card with the incident number written on the back.
  5. Report the crash to your own insurer, but put off the other driver’s carrier if it asks to record your account.
  6. Start a folder that same night: bills, your employer’s note about missed shifts, and mileage to every appointment in the valley or over the pass.

Deadlines, Fault, and the North Valley District

A Valencia fender-bender and a Newhall Pass pileup share the same basic lawsuit deadline: two years (California Code of Civil Procedure § 335.1). That runway shrinks to six months for the written claim required when a Santa Clarita Transit bus, a county truck, or a badly designed intersection shares the blame (California Government Code § 911.2). If the other side argues you were drifting or distracted, California’s comparative-fault rule reduces the award by your share instead of eliminating it (CACI 405).

Valley collisions that reach litigation generally go to the North Valley District, the part of the county court system that covers this end of Los Angeles County under a 2024 standing order tying each injury case to its crash location. The local courthouse at 23747 West Valencia Boulevard handles criminal, traffic, and some civil matters; the district also includes the Chatsworth Courthouse at 9425 Penfield Avenue. Our office checks that assignment against the court’s locator using the precise crash address.

Usually yes, because public operators generally require the six-month government claim first. Keep your ticket or pass record to show you were aboard.

Our Role After a Valley Crash

The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani handles auto accident claims across the valley, from Newhall Pass pileups to Orchard Village Road pedestrian cases. Beyond cars, we represent Santa Clarita riders, College of the Canyons and CalArts students, and I-5 commuters in motorcycle and big-rig crashes, bike and e-bike wrecks, dog bites, slip-and-fall injuries, and wrongful death claims.

When a deputy from the Golden Valley Road station wrote the report, we request it along with the Henry Mayo trauma chart in the first week. A first conversation costs nothing, and our fee is paid only out of a recovery. Representatives can come to you in Canyon Country, Saugus, or wherever you are recovering.

From Valencia or Canyon Country, call (888) 952-2952. If talking is difficult, our case evaluator accepts typed answers. Para familias que prefieren el español.
